We could all agree that mattress stores, with their fluorescent overhead lighting and sea of options are ironically, some of the most stress-inducing spaces. The Coast gave this 6000 sqft showroom in Los Angeles, a total identity change, transforming a series of product galleries into an elevated shopping experience for the luxury mattress brand Aireloom. Inspired by traditional shoji screens, The Coast approached the design through the concept of blurred boundaries - creating moments like doors that are slightly ajar, hiding and revealing at the same time, inviting visitors to be guided by intuition and provoking their imagination.

As architects, we design, draw, make models, coordinate, source material, coordinate, redline and coordinate. We do mockups in home depot and specify materials and dimensions with the millworker but we might never even see the finished space itself save for blurry and distorted images through WhatsApp or FaceTime.
